FAQ
For a full FAQ or other questions, please visit the Royal Caribbean website here.
Everyone will need to present an accepted form of identification to board the ship. We strongly recommend that all guests present a passport as their form of ID on boarding day, and for some guests a passport is required.
The passport must be valid for six months after the day your cruise ends. The name on your passport should match the name on your reservation. What if my name doesn’t match?
While some other forms of ID may be accepted for your cruise, a passport is the very best option and here’s why:
- A passport is the hassle-free, gold standard for traveling between countries.
- Boarding and disembarking through customs with a passport is usually faster than other types of ID documents.
- If you have an issue while exploring a foreign port (such as missing the ship), it’s best to have a passport with you.
Guests who do not bring required documents may be denied boarding.

U.S Citizens
Yes – U.S. citizens born in the US can present a state-certified birth certificate and government-issued photo ID to sail on most cruises departing from the U.S. But a passport is the more efficient, secure option.
Learn more about why passports are best.
Should you decide to present your birth certificate on boarding day, please keep these guidelines in mind:
- Most, but not all, sailings from the U.S. will accept a birth certificate. Learn if your sailing does at our Travel Documents Hub.
- It must be a state-certified birth certificate issued by the government. No “baby feet” certificates, no hospital birth certificates and no baptismal papers.
- You must present the original copy, no photo copies.
- You must also show a valid government issued photo ID, like a driver’s license.
- Guests 15 and under do not need to show to show an ID, just the birth certificate.
- The name across all docs, and the reservation, must match. What if the name on my documents doesn’t match?
- Puerto Rican birth certificates issued prior to July 1, 2010 are not valid. The government of Puerto Rico has partnered with VitalChek.com to issue new birth certificates.
Canadian Citizen
Similarly, Canadian citizens age 14 and under may present an original Canadian-issued birth certificate.
Should you decide to present your birth certificate on boarding day, please keep these guidelines in mind:
- Birth certificates are accepted as identification only for Canadian citizens age 14 and under. The certificate must be an original Canadian-issued birth certificate.
- No supplemental document required unless minor is traveling with relatives or friends, then a notarized Travel Consent Form is required. Learn More.
Guests who do not bring required documents may be denied boarding.

When it’s time to check in, we recommend you use the Royal Caribbean app to check in all guests on your reservation. You will receive an email a few weeks prior to departure with more information regarding check in, the Royal Caribbean app, and other pre-departure details. The app provides a quick and easy check-in process so you can start your vacation sooner. Updates include:
- Your arrival time at the terminal - a scheduled arrival time at the terminal on your sail date
- The required Health Questionnaire – only available in advance in the app
- Our reimagined Safety Briefing - Simply tap the Safety icon on the homepage to launch the Safety Briefing, whether you’re in the terminal or you’ve just stepped onboard, to complete the first steps of the Safety Briefing before heading to your assigned Assembly Station. Remember all guests must complete the Safety Briefing before the ship can sail.
- Extended app check in window - Check in using the app until 8am the morning of your sailing
As before, guests may also check in using our website up to 48 hours before sailing. Guests must complete check in, however, using the app or at the terminal. We highly recommend completing check in using the app for the easiest, fastest, and complete check-in experience.
Royal Caribbean International requires guests to be checked in no later than 90 minutes prior to the scheduled sailing time*. Guests arriving late will not be permitted to sail.
When you check-in at the terminal, show your SetSail Pass in the app to the terminal agent to scan and complete the check-in process.
Yes, all ports have transfer services to and from the airport at an additional fee.
When purchasing your airline tickets with Air2Sea, cruise transfers are provided as an option on the guest preference page.
If you did not receive your transfer vouchers with your travel documents, you will be on the manifest and greeted at your arrival airport by one of our representatives.
Guests should arrive at the terminal within the arrival time slot you selected during Royal App check-in. A few weeks prior to departure, you will receive an email from Royal Caribbean with information about the Royal App, check in, and other pre-departure details. Your arrival time is listed on your mobile boarding pass. Those who arrive early will not be able to begin boarding, and those who arrive late will need to wait until we are able to work them into another group.
Due to government regulations requiring cruise lines to submit final departure manifests at least 60 minutes prior to sailing, guests are requested to complete check-in no later than 3 days prior to their cruise. If you do not complete check-in 3 days prior, you will be required to complete this process at the pier at least two hours prior to the published sailing time. Please note: All guests must be checked-in and onboard the ship no later than 90 minutes prior to the published sailing time or you will not be permitted to sail.
If you choose to fly ChoiceAir, Royal Caribbean automatically displays only the airline schedules that will enable you to meet your cruise. For your return home, you have the ability to select the flight that best suits your schedule. Depending on your disembarkation time and port, the time needed to arrive at the airport will vary.
On the final morning of a cruise experience in most countries all guests must leave the ship before the guests joining the next cruise can board.
Guests will receive a specific color luggage tag that will correlate to the time they are to debark the ship. Guests should be ready to debark at their assigned time.
- Specific Lounges will be assigned to certain color luggage tags. Guests should make it to their assigned lounge 15 minutes prior to their assigned departure time.
- "As You Depart" flyer will provide information on which lounge the guest will need to go to based on their luggage tag color.
- Information will be shown on various TV channels in the stateroom during the morning of departure to remind guests which lounge they should go to.
- Signage will be available throughout the ship as needed to assist guests on which lounge to go to.

- Separate waiting areas will be provided for guests with Disabilities, Suite Guests, Diamond & Platinum Members, Luggage Valet Guests, and Consecutive Cruisers (B2B).
For guests who have purchased air, hotel and cruisetour packages through Royal Caribbean, transfers will be provided. If you have made your own air and hotel arrangements, you will be responsible for that transportation to the airport and/or hotel. For cruise-only guests, we offer Royal Connections transfer service. Please contact your travel advisor or our Customer Service Department for complete details.
ONBOARD THE SHIP:
When you’re onboard, the right look will vary by venue. But here are a few types of suggested attire you’ll see, grouped by item.
- Casual: You’re on vacation – relax! Jeans, polos, sundresses and blouses are all the right amount of laid back. Please keep swimwear to the Pool Deck. Shorts are welcome for breakfast and lunch.
- Smart Casual: Think of this as a step up from your typical dinner wear. Dress to impress with collared shirts, dresses, skirts and blouses, or pantsuits. Jackets, sports coats and blazers are snazzy and welcome.
- Formal: Make it a night out in your best black-tie look – suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns. There can be 1-3 Dress Your Best during a sailing and is at the ship’s discretion.
Dress Your Best
Think of our formal dress code as a night out in your best black-tie look — suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns are all acceptable options. There can be 1 to 4 Dress Your Best during a sailing and is at the ship’s discretion. Our Chef’s Table dining experience also enforces a formal dress code policy.
- 5-night cruises: One Dress Your Best night
Main Dining Room/Specialty Dining Venues
- Bare feet are not allowed at any time in any venue and tank tops are not permitted in the Main Dining Room or Specialty Dining venues for dinner.
Casino Dress Code
- Shirt and shoes are always required. Cover-ups should be worn over bathing attire.
Each guest is permitted to carry a reasonable amount of personal property (including luggage) aboard the vessel; however, for your comfort and convenience, it is recommended that you limit the number of pieces you take.
Each guest has the option to carry their luggage on board or check-in luggage prior to boarding. Luggage may include suitcases, trunks, valises, satchels, bags, hangers containing clothing, toiletries and similar items. Here are some recommendations for packing only cruise essentials.
We recommend that guests personally carry any boarding documentation such as passports, visas, citizenship documents and family legal documents plus all medications. To minimize the potential for diversion or loss of medications, we advise that all medications remain in their original, labeled prescription containers. It is also advisable to pack at least three days of extra medication in the event of an unexpected change in the itinerary of the voyage. It is also a good idea for guests to pack a small carry-on bag with a change of clothes, and bathing suit. That way they don't have to wait for their checked bags to arrive in their stateroom. Luggage may be locked only with a TSA approved lock.
Any carry-on luggage must be able to fit through the x-ray screening machines. These machines vary in size from port to port, however generally they are similar to those found at airport security check points. Guests wishing to carry their luggage with them during boarding should note that their stateroom may not be immediately available to store their luggage.
